With this soundtrack in mind, one cannot but treasure the option that allows to rapidly switch between SingStar discs without having to restart the game: whoever has a copy of SingStar Rocks! will probably hurry up and go back to it after trying a couple of SingStar Pop's "hits," which seem to have been selected to satisfy everybody when, in reality, they'll satisfy almost no one. This tutorial is under construction, completing the ire gradually. Even in the case of a respected band such as U2 the selected track is the disappointing "Vertigo" instead of one of their old but still fascinating hits. Other options include Whitney Houston, Avril Lavigne, 3 Doors Down and Destiny's Child. The good tracks are, paradoxically, the ones having nothing to do with pop music: Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out" and the legendary "Should I Stay or Should I Go" by The Clash are an enjoyable trip into rock music, while Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and A-ha's "Take On Me" could have easily been stolen from the excellent SingStar '80s, another Europe-only release. The parade of pop queens features Ashlee Simpson, Rihanna, Natasha Bedingfield and even Britney's debut song "Hit Me Baby One More Time," while My Chemical Romance's "Helena" is a nice, noisy alternative. Let's start with the trio that most highbrow music lovers will run away from: Hoobastank's "The Reason," Daniel Powter's "Bad Day," and James Blunt's "You're Beautiful." Was there any reason to include three songs that many an American ended up hating after the carpet bombing done by every pop radio station for months?
When I reviewed 's release in Italy, I thought that I had seen the worst of the series, but now I have to admit that Sony always finds a way to fulfill one's expectations, either in a good or bad way. Why then does its score sink compared to SingStar Rocks? The reason is, of course, the soundtrack itself, a mismatched assortment of tracks ranging from the cheesiest pop music to some '80s hits, to a couple of good but completely out-of-place rock songs. From a technical perspective, SingStar Pop is nothing less than the original American installment released in November 2006.
